5 of the Best Day Trips from the Gold Coast

View from the Hinterlands

Whether you’re after a weekend getaway or an adventure in nature, there’s plenty of beautiful day trips worth a visit from the Gold Coast! Explore iconic lookouts, spot Australian wildlife and indulge at sun-soaked wineries just a short distance away. Keep reading for my top recommendations that will take you to your next adventure, in 90 minutes drive or less.

1. Hinterland

Home to some of the best waterfalls and bush walks in the Gold Coast, the Hinterland is a must-see for anyone who loves to get out and about in nature. Leave enough time for an easy (and relatively short) bush walk through Springbrook National Park to visit Natural Bridge – a beautiful waterfall that cascades through a cave. I highly recommend making time to visit The Best of All Lookouts and Canyon Lookout for great views over the rainforest, Gold Coast and northern New South Wales.

2. Tamborine Mountain

For another fun adventure in nature, take a short drive (45 minutes roughly from Surfers Paradise) to Mount Tamborine, a rainforest bursting with tasty wineries and lookouts offering stunning views over the Gold Coast. I highly recommend stopping in at Eagle Heights Resort, where you’ll find a beautiful Beergarden with views making it well worth the trip. Another must-see is the view from Hang Glider Lookout, and if you visit in the evening you can even catch a beautiful sunset!

3. Brisbane

Switch up the pace by heading to Brisbane CBD for the weekend, only an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast. Here you can take a CityCat down the river, visit the central museums, treat yourself to a shopping spree and take a ride on the Wheel of Brisbane for iconic city views! Foodies will love the multitude of great cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from – many of which have waterfront views overlooking Story Bridge.

4. Currumbin

Just a short drive south of the Gold Coast is Currumbin, a quaint coastal town perfect for a change of scene. Visit Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to cuddle some koalas and spot beautiful birds, or stop in at Honeyworld to taste some of the best freshly made honey around. For lunch, I highly recommend stopping at Pasture & Co, a cute family-friendly cafe offering plenty of greenery and wildlife spotting while you enjoy an organic, sustainably sourced lunch!

5. Byron Bay

If you’re a fan of a fun roadie, cross into New South Wales territory to the stunning Byron Bay. This coastal town is home to the iconic Byron Bay Lighthouse, offering stunning views from up on the hill just a short drive from the township. Stroll down the sun-soaked streets to find boutique shops selling beautiful bohemian clothing as well as jewellery and art. There’s even a crystal gallery, if that’s your thing!

Useful for Goldie ‘newbs’ – I tend to think of Currumbin as an exyension of the Gold coast but the Currumbin valley is a great spot. I am heading then next week. Might check out that lunch spot.

I visited the Cafe, Lucy Rebecca. The meals were wholesome, tasty and huge….. I am sure I added two kilos after visiting. Did you see the size of the Lemon Meringue Pies?
