Top 6 Restaurants in Auckland CBD

Snacks at Onslow restaurant

From celebrating classic flavours to modern takes on the traditional, there’s no doubt Auckland CBD is home to many of the best restaurants the city has the offer. Keep reading to discover my top restaurant choices that guarantee a truly unforgettable dining experience.

1. Onslow, Princes Street

From the award-winning restaurateur Josh Emett, Onslow offers a dining experience you’ll never forget. This classy establishment combines elegance and quality, while celebrating the best ingredients from New Zealand farmers and producers. I highly recommend their signature Chatham Island Crayfish Eclair and the Miso-Butter Poached Snapper, both of which highlight the beautiful flavours at Onslow.

2. Prego, Ponsonby

Serving classic Italian since 1986, Prego is known for being one of Auckland’s oldest restaurants, and it’s no surprise why it continues to thrive to this day! Nestled in the heart of Ponsonby, Prego doubles as a family-friendly restaurant and a romantic spot for date night. I recommend starting with their delicious Arancini balls, followed by one of their flavoursome pastas or wholesome pizzas.

3. Amano, Britomart

Another Italian you won’t want to miss is Amano. Beautiful pastas such as the Butternut Sopressini or the Lamb Pappardelle are essentials to try, and finish your evening with one (or three) or their fruit infused cocktails. I highly recommend the delicious Tamarillo cocktail if you’re lucky enough to visit during their winter menu!

4. Kol, Ponsonby

Head to Ponsonby to try Kol, brought to you by restauranteurs Sid and Chand Sahrawat (Sid at the French Cafe, and Cassia on Federal Street). Kol offers quality Indian-influenced cuisine with a distinct smokiness and earthiness to its flavours. Finish the night with one of their elaborate cocktails, or choose from their extensive champagne and wine list.

5. Ada, Grey Lynn

With a menu celebrating classic Māori ingredients, Ada is beautiful dining experience you won’t want to miss. Can’t decide what to eat? Their Roasted Cauliflower or Pickled Seasoned Veg to start won’t disappoint. Then, you might think their boneless Market Fish with Marmite sauce sounds peculiar, but believe me, it’s a stand-out dish that will make you glad you chose something a little bit different!

6. Soul, Viaduct

Combining stunning views of the Viaduct Harbour with delicious food, Soul is a long-lasting favourite in the heart of Auckland that’s been running for over two decades. You can’t go past their delicious Market Fish or their range of beautiful seafood pastas. Soul is perfect for a romantic date night as well as a fun start to the weekend thanks to the selection of vibey DJ’s and dancefloor, following the dinner service.
